June marks the beginning of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which has been extended now into Pride Season, which is all summer long. For many lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transexuals, along with straight allies, the meaning of “pride” has evolved from a celebration of acceptance and expression within the gay civil rights movement, to a corporate-sponsored excuse for narcissistic hedonism, a more biblical definition of “pride” which involves vanity, shallow sexuality, and the expression of more than just acceptance and expression, but public coercion from…mostly straight people.
The “Q+” in LGBTQ is a catchall term for anyone who self-identifies with some abstract form of gender identity (soul) or sexual label other than same-sex attracted (straight.) The Q+ is regarded by many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexual civil rights activists as a hiding place for "spicey straights” (heterosexual people who enjoy colors and partying) and sexual predators who want to dissolve boundaries under the guise of acceptance, tolerance, and love.
To counter the bastardization of Pride, I created designs based in free speech, women’s empowerment, and otherwise pro-reality sentiments that are lacking today.
